Portland provides the excitement of a big city with the quality of life in a small town - the perfect place for a young adult in early recovery. Portland provides an urban environment on a remarkable coastline, just a short drive from some of the most beautiful and remote wilderness in the country. Its eclectic mix of the arts, outdoor lifestyle and port city heritage has made Portland one of he most vibrant small cities in America.

A dynamic waterfront, plentiful green space, live music, a celebrated restaurant and food scene and multiple universities attract students from all over the world, creating a distinctly youthful and active presence on the East Coast.

The city also is home to an energetic recovery community, with more than 100 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings weekly, all within walking distance of Foundation House. Portland’s intimate size lends itself to a closely linked sober community, and our tourism-based economy provides an abundance of entry-level jobs to help young people new to recovery get back on their feet.

In September of 2018, Conde Nast Traveler recently listed Portland, Maine atop its list of “Most Beautiful Towns in America”. Please click here: Conde Nast: Portland to read the article.

in our backyard.

The beauty of Maine’s wilderness is awe-inspiring and transformative. Wide-open spaces, deep woods, more coastline than California, more untouched wilderness than any state besides Alaska, and the best mountains in New England offer endless possibilities to engage in the outdoors.

Hiking, camping, sailing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing and hunting are just a few of the activities for which Maine is known. The outdoor adventures don’t stop in the winter months either. Some of the best mountains in the Northeast are a short drive from Portland and offer excellent skiing and snowboarding all winter long. Ice climbing, dogsledding, cross-country skiing and pond hockey keep our residents busy and outdoors no matter the time of year. Whether you are transitioning from a wilderness program and want to stay connected to the outdoors or if you have a desire to find yourself in Maine’s wilderness – our state provides a beautiful canvas for this connection.
