What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults and can have a significant impact on various aspects of daily functioning, including attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity.
There are three main types of ADHD, each characterized by specific patterns of symptoms:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive Presentation (ADHD-PI): Individuals with this presentation primarily struggle with attention and may have difficulty sustaining attention on tasks, organizing activities, and completing assignments. They may appear forgetful and easily distracted.
  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation (ADHD-HI): Individuals with this presentation primarily display hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. They may have difficulty sitting still, act impulsively without considering the consequences, and struggle with self-control.
  3. Combined Presentation (ADHD-C): This is the most common type, characterized by a combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

The exact cause of ADHD is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. ADHD often coexists with other conditions such as learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders.
