What is Executive Functioning?

Executive functioning refers to a set of mental processes that enable individuals to plan, organize, initiate, and complete tasks. It involves higher-level cognitive functions that help people manage time, pay attention, switch focus, plan and organize, remember details, and regulate their behavior. These functions are crucial for daily life activities, problem-solving, and goal achievement.

Difficulties with executive functioning can manifest in various ways and may be associated with conditions such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, brain injury, and certain neurological disorders. However, executive functioning challenges can also occur independently of any diagnosis and are very common at Foundation House.

How is treatment tailored?

At Foundation House, all residents are taught executive function skills and are engaged with these skills daily.

Treatment for executive functioning difficulties typically involves a combination of strategies to improve specific skills and address underlying issues. These interventions include behavioral approaches, cognitive remediation, psychoeducational support, and environmental modifications. Executive Functioning skills are woven into every Foundation House group, interaction, and activity to create a consistent structure for living.

The Foundation House approach to treating Executive Functioning Issues:

Executive Functioning Skills Training

Executive Functioning Skills Training refers to a set of interventions aimed at developing and improving executive functions. These skills are integrated into all aspects of therapeutic work and activities at Foundation House and are modeled to individuals to demonstrate that effective executive functioning skills lead to healthy, effective lives.

Behavioral Interventions

Foundation House therapists use behavior modification techniques to teach and reinforce specific executive functioning skills. This can include providing incentives for completing tasks, setting achievable goals, and implementing strategies to improve self-control.

Mindfulness and Self-Regulation Practices

Mindfulness and self-regulation practices embody therapeutic approaches dedicated to nurturing present-moment awareness, fostering emotional regulation, and honing the capacity to respond to situations with intention and a non-reactive mindset. Revered for their efficacy, these practices stand as pivotal components in Foundation House’s treatment of diverse issues, including deficits in executive functioning. These methods are implemented during daily meditation sessions, yoga practice, and Emotional Regulation group.
