What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Traumatic events that can lead to PTSD include natural disasters, serious accidents, sexual assault, combat, or other life-threatening experiences. While many people may have strong emotional reactions to traumatic events, not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD.

How is treatment tailored?

Foundation House provides treatment for PTSD which aims to alleviate symptoms, improve functioning, and help individuals regain a sense of control and well-being.

Several evidence-based therapeutic approaches that are used to treat PTSD at Foundation House are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), group therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychoeducation, and at times, medication. It’s important to note that the choice of treatment may depend on the individual’s preferences, the nature of the trauma, and the severity of symptoms. Often, Foundation House uses a combination of therapies to address different aspects of PTSD.

The Foundation House approach to treating PTSD:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR stands as a psychotherapeutic cornerstone, specializing in the treatment of individuals who have undergone trauma, especially those grappling with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Esteemed as an effective and evidence-based intervention for trauma-related disorders, EMDR has garnered recognition and endorsement from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Foundation House employs those who are trained in EMDR to assist in treating PTSD, trauma, and related stressors.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a comprehensive and evidence-based form of psychotherapy that was initially developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it has since been adapted for use in various mental health conditions characterized by emotional dysregulation and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. DBT integrates cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with elements of acceptance and mindfulness practices. It is structured around the concept of dialectics, which refers to the fusion of opposing ideas or viewpoints. In DBT, the primary dialectic is the balance between acceptance and change. This treatment at Foundation House focuses on helping individuals build a life worth living while accepting themselves and their current circumstances.

Holistic-Based Approaches

Holistic-based approaches at Foundation House encompass a comprehensive and integrative methodology that addresses the interconnected aspects of an individual’s well-being, acknowledging the interplay between physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. This inclusive approach goes beyond symptom management to promote overall health and harmony. Integrating various holistic interventions, such as nutrition, therapeutic float tanks, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, exercise, yoga, meditation, music, art, and creative expression can complement traditional treatments at Foundation House by addressing multiple aspects of healing.
