At Foundation House, we view substance use disorder (SUD) as a chronic, treatable medical condition. Our philosophy places dignity, self-determination, and long-term wellness at the center of care. Recovery here isn’t just about stopping the use of alcohol or drugs—it’s about rebuilding a life of purpose, healthy relationships, and sustainable coping skills.

What is Substance Use Disorder?

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a medical condition characterized by the problematic or harmful use of substances, including alcohol and drugs. It is commonly referred to as addiction or substance abuse. SUD is a complex condition that involves continued use despite harmful consequences and long-lasting changes in the brain. SUD is considered a chronic, relapsing condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. It has both genetic and environmental factors that contribute to its development.

How is treatment tailored?

Foundation House treats substance use disorder (SUD) with a comprehensive and multidimensional approach that addresses the physical, psychological, and social aspects of the condition.

One-on-one and group counseling sessions with our professionals can help individuals explore underlying issues contributing to substance use and develop coping and relapse prevention strategies. It is important to note that successful treatment often requires a personalized and ongoing approach. Additionally, addressing co-occurring mental health disorders, if present, is essential for comprehensive care. The combination of these elements can contribute to a person’s successful recovery from substance use disorder.

The Foundation House approach to treating Substance Use Disorder:

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)/ Motivational Interviewing (MI)

MET is a therapeutic approach used at Foundation House designed to evoke and strengthen an individual’s motivation to change problematic behaviors, particularly substance use. MET is grounded in the principles of motivational interviewing (MI) and aims to increase an individual’s readiness to make positive changes in their life.

Individual and Group Therapy

Individual therapy sessions provide the opportunity for a personalized exploration of the underlying issues that contribute to substance abuse. At Foundation House, individuals meet with their therapist at least one time weekly to dive deep into their underlying concerns. On the other hand, group therapy creates a supportive environment where individuals can share their experiences, receive feedback, and learn coping strategies. One such group in our 20-hour group curriculum is the Relapse Prevention Group, which concentrates on identifying triggers, developing coping mechanisms, and creating a relapse prevention plan to ensure long-term recovery.

Holistic-Based Approaches

Holistic-based approaches at Foundation House encompass a comprehensive and integrative methodology that addresses the interconnected aspects of an individual’s well-being, acknowledging the interplay between physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. This inclusive approach goes beyond symptom management to promote overall health and harmony. Integrating various holistic interventions, such as nutrition, therapeutic float tanks, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, exercise, yoga, meditation, music, art, and creative expression, can complement traditional treatments at Foundation House by addressing multiple aspects of healing.
