What is Trauma?

Trauma refers to a psychological, physical, and emotional response to an event or series of events that are disturbing or harmful. Traumatic experiences can be overwhelming, leaving individuals feeling helpless, frightened, or distressed. Trauma can have a profound impact on a person’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being, often influencing their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors long after the traumatic event has occurred. Trauma can lead to the development of mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, depression, and other related issues. It’s important to note that individuals respond to trauma differently, and not everyone who experiences a traumatic event will develop long-term psychological symptoms. Support from mental health professionals can be crucial in the recovery process.

The Foundation House approach to treating Trauma:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR stands as a psychotherapeutic cornerstone, specializing in the treatment of individuals who have undergone trauma, especially those grappling with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Esteemed as an effective and evidence-based intervention for trauma-related disorders, EMDR has garnered recognition and endorsement from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Foundation House employs those who are trained in EMDR to assist in treating trauma and related stressors.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a comprehensive and evidence-based form of psychotherapy that was initially developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it has since been adapted for use in various mental health conditions characterized by emotional dysregulation and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. DBT integrates cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with elements of acceptance and mindfulness practices. It is structured around the concept of dialectics, which refers to the fusion of opposing ideas or viewpoints. In DBT, the primary dialectic is the balance between acceptance and change. This treatment at Foundation House focuses on helping individuals build a life worth living while accepting themselves and their current circumstances.

Holistic-Based Approaches

Holistic-based approaches at Foundation House encompass a comprehensive and integrative methodology that addresses the interconnected aspects of an individual’s well-being, acknowledging the interplay between physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. This inclusive approach goes beyond symptom management to promote overall health and harmony. Integrating various holistic interventions, such as nutrition, therapeutic float tanks, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, exercise, yoga, meditation, music, art, and creative expression can complement traditional treatments at Foundation House by addressing multiple aspects of healing.
